Morocco emerged as Spain’s largest fresh fruit and vegetable supplier in the first five months of 2025, delivering €834 million worth of produce and achieving a remarkable 30% year-over-year growth, according to official Spanish data.
The significant performance places Morocco well ahead of traditional European suppliers, with France ranking second at €234 million—representing a 6% decline compared to the same period in 2024. The Spanish Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters (Fepex) reported these figures based on competent authority data.
While France maintained volume leadership with 549,069 tons (up 11%), Morocco followed closely with 322,810 tons, representing a substantial 26% increase in export volumes to Spain. This demonstrates Morocco’s growing market penetration beyond just value metrics.
Spain’s total fresh produce imports reached €2.655 billion through May, marking a 13% annual increase. Notably, non-European Union countries captured 70% of this market value, totaling €1.806 billion, highlighting the competitive advantage of North African suppliers.
The shifting import patterns reflect broader challenges facing Spanish domestic producers, who struggle to compete with lower-cost international suppliers. This competitive pressure has prompted Fepex to lobby European parliamentarians for revised trade agreements with non-EU countries, particularly targeting Morocco.
