Polisario’s trip to London, an unsuccessful attempt – The North Africa Post

After UK has joined the United States, France and other western allies in supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, the Algeria-backed Polisario separatist group has sent lately a delegation to London in a desperate attempt to reverse UK supportive position of Morocco’ s Autonomy Plan.

The move of the separatists comes after the United Kingdom has expressed clear support for the Autonomy Plan offered by Morocco for the Sahara under its sovereignty as “the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for settling the dispute.”

UK’s backing of Morocco has dealt a hard blow to the Polisario’s big bet on the new labour Starmer government to shift position but their hopes were hit by harsh reality.

The Polisario delegation was received by foreign office minister Hamish Falconer at the foreign office headquarters, but the meeting has not apparently produced the results expected by the Algeria-backed separatists.

In their press statement, the Polisario used vague phrases such as “adherence to the fundamental principles of the UN Charter” and “respect for human rights and the rights of peoples”, without mentioning any change in the official position of the United Kingdom.

It is worth noting that the British Foreign Office has not issued any statement and refused to make any comment, suggesting that it was a mere protocol meeting rather than a game-changer political gathering.

The Polisario returned home without getting any pledge of support as the U.S. Congress is moving to designate the separatist group a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) for its terrorist deadly attacks and ties with States sponsor of terrorism such as Iran and its extremist proxies.
