Moroccan Ambassador reappointed as AUC Chairperson’s Special Representative, Head of AU Liaison Office in Sudan – The North Africa Post

The African Union Commission has reappointed Moroccan Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche as Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission and Head of the AU Liaison Office in Sudan.

By renewing this appointment, AU Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf builds on the original designation made in 2019 by his predecessor, Moussa Faki Mahamat. The decision underscores the recognition of Morocco’s expertise and its commitment to advancing peace and stability in Africa.

A seasoned diplomat, Belaiche has held several high-level positions, including that of Morocco’s Ambassador to Sudan, where he strengthened bilateral dialogue and actively worked to understand local and regional dynamics.

He brings to his role within the African Union deep field knowledge and solid experience in mediation processes and the management of political transitions.

This renewal also clearly demonstrates the confidence placed in Morocco for its constructive role in preventing and resolving crises on the African continent. It reaffirms the relevance of the Kingdom’s approach, which is based on dialogue, preventive diplomacy, and support for transitions.

Moreover, this renewed mandate further consolidates Morocco’s image as a committed partner for peace, stability, and development in Africa.

The renewal also comes amid a complex regional context, where supporting peace efforts, promoting national reconciliation, and backing institutional reconstruction processes are of particular importance.

In this regard, it is worth recalling that during Morocco’s presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council in September 2019, the Kingdom conducted a determined diplomatic initiative that led to Sudan’s reinstatement within the AU following a period of suspension. Welcomed by African countries and international partners, this achievement has marked a significant milestone in the AU’s support for Sudan’s transition.
