A painful déjà vu for Algeria: Portugal has once again voiced its support for the Kingdom’s proposal, describing it as a “serious and credible” solution to a conflict that has lingered for decades. The endorsement, made during a bilateral meeting between Moroccan and Portuguese officials, adds Lisbon to the expanding list of European capitals aligning with Rabat’s vision for regional stability and development.
Morocco’s autonomy plan, first presented to the United Nations in 2007, offers the Sahara region self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty. The proposal has been widely praised for its pragmatism and alignment with international law, particularly the principles of territorial integrity and peaceful resolution. Over 30 countries have opened consulates in Laâyoune and Dakhla, signaling their recognition of Morocco’s administration and its development efforts in the region.
Portugal’s reaffirmation is not merely symbolic. It reflects a strategic partnership rooted in shared interests, including trade, migration, and regional security. Lisbon’s stance also mirrors that of other key European powers such as Spain, France, the Netherlands and Germany, all of which have publicly supported Morocco’s autonomy initiative. This growing support underscores the diplomatic success of Morocco’s foreign policy, which has been proactive, consistent, and guided by the High Royal Directives.
Meanwhile, Algeria- the prime backer of the separatist Polisario militias- has remained conspicuously silent. The lack of an official response from Algiers speaks volumes. According to diplomatic observers, the silence masks a deep discomfort as Algeria finds itself increasingly isolated on the Sahara issue. The international tide is clearly turning, and Algeria’s insistence on unfeasible options appears increasingly out of step with global realities.
As self-imposed isolation deepens for Algeria, its foreign minister is said to have sighed, reached for his well-worn folder labeled “Firm Protest,” and then quietly put it back in the drawer.
Algerian diplomats must now have taken by heart the phrase describing Morocco’s autonomy plan as “serious and credible” and “the only solution” to the Sahara conflict in different languages.
Back in Rabat, the mood is far more upbeat. Morocco continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, renewable energy, and social development in the Sahara region, turning it into a model of inclusive growth. The Kingdom’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, with international partners praising its commitment to stability and prosperity.
Portugal’s support also carries weight within the European Union, where Lisbon is seen as a moderate and influential voice. By backing Morocco’s plan, Portugal contributes to shaping a coherent EU position on the Sahara issue, one that favors negotiated solutions over outdated ideological stances.
