On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has issued a grave warning that it may be compelled to reduce food rations in South Sudan as early as September due to critical funding shortfalls. Currently, WFP can only assist 2.5 million individuals—just 30 percent of those experiencing severe hunger—across the country. The agency is appealing for an immediate injection of $274 million to sustain food aid through the end of 2025 for the most vulnerable.
Carl Skau, WFP Deputy Executive Director, underscored the dire humanitarian situation following his recent visit to South Sudan, noting that the sheer scale of suffering often goes unnoticed. With 7.7 million people—more than half the population—facing crisis or worse levels of hunger, and 2.3 million children at risk of malnutrition, the WFP warns that without urgent donor support, already devastated communities in flood- and conflict-hit areas like Unity and Upper Nile States could face even more catastrophic conditions.
