Mounting Anger Against Ruto as Kenyans Decry Broken Promises, Corruption and Repression – The North Africa Post

Kenyan President William Ruto is facing intensifying public outrage as citizens rally under the slogan “WANTAM” — a campaign demanding he ‘be a one-term President’’.
Discontent began shortly after his 2022 election victory, fuelled by tax hikes seen as a betrayal of promises to support the working class.
Protests erupted last year, culminating in violent clashes that left over 20 people dead, with demonstrators storming Parliament. A recent death of a blogger in Police custody has reignited tensions, with many accusing Ruto of presiding over corrupt governance and repressive rule. Though he holds control over key institutions, analysts say Ruto suffers from deep public distrust and a credibility crisis.
Protesters are demanding an end to graft and state impunity, angered by scandals such as the aborted \$2 billion airport deal with India’s Adani Group, and by Ruto’s perceived alignment with the elite at the expense of the poor. Despite growing pressure, Ruto insists his tax reforms are vital to prevent national bankruptcy and sustain economic growth. Yet critics argue these policies disproportionately harm the masses while shielding political and business elites. Citizens remain embittered by what they view as unfulfilled promises and worsening living conditions. The president’s dismissive rhetoric and threats have only further alienated those who once supported his populist “hustler nation” campaign.
Political infighting has also cast a shadow over Ruto’s presidency. He has marginalised both allies and rivals alike, ousting Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and co-opting opposition figure Raila Odinga to neutralise potential threats. Once hailed as an underdog reformer, Ruto’s grip on power has increasingly been seen as autocratic. As opposition movements, youth groups, and civil society continue to mobilise, observers warn of deepening unrest if Ruto fails to engage meaningfully with the grievances of ordinary Kenyans. Many now view his rule as a case of overpromising and underdelivering — a presidency losing legitimacy in the eyes of the people.
