Media reports published following the events surrounding the collective crossing attempt toward the city of Ceuta indicated that several workers at the Tanger Med port were among those who took part in the events, as the developments attracted widespread media attention through testimonies from some participants and reports on their economic and social repercussions across several sectors in northern Morocco.
Reuters reported in an article published on August 1, 2026, that the collective crossing wave prompted a number of workers and employees to leave their workplaces, including workers in hotels and bakeries, as well as employees at the Tanger Med port. According to the report, the situation resulted in a temporary labor shortage in some sectors before return movements to Morocco began.
Al Jazeera Net also published a report entitled “Ceuta Between Political Pressure Cards and Humanitarian Consequences,” stating that several Tanger Med port workers left their jobs to participate in attempts to cross collectively into Ceuta. The report described the port as one of the institutions temporarily affected by the loss of part of its workforce during that period.
In another report entitled “A Journey Without Provisions… Europe-Bound Migrants Recall Their Days in Ceuta,” Al Jazeera Net quoted a Tanger Med port worker who described the conditions he experienced in the city. He said he intended to return to his job after coming back to Morocco and indicated that economic and social factors were among the reasons that prompted him to take part in the crossing attempt.
The testimonies cited by the reports also described difficult conditions experienced by some participants, including searching for water and food, sleeping in open areas and returning with wet clothes after crossing attempts, while operations to return several people to Moroccan territory continued.
In a new development, information obtained by Tanger Post indicates that some companies operating at Tanger Med port have begun taking administrative measures provided for under labor legislation against a number of employees who failed to report back to their workplaces following the recent wave of crossings toward Ceuta.
According to the same information, absence notices were sent today to the employees concerned through companies specializing in delivery and notification services, with the aim of delivering the notices to their registered addresses, as part of the administrative procedures applied by the companies involved.
The measures come as some companies continue to monitor the situation of employees who have not yet resumed work following the recent events, while a number of participants in the crossing wave have returned to Morocco and others remain outside the country.
