After the 200-dirham incident, calls grow for smart parking across Tangier

    ayaJuly 17, 2026

The issue of informal parking attendants has once again become a topic of public debate in Tangier after a Moroccan expatriate claimed that she was asked to pay 200 Moroccan dirhams to park her vehicle on one of the city’s streets. The incident sparked widespread discussion on social media and renewed calls for better regulation of public parking and stronger measures to curb practices that many residents and visitors have criticized.

The debate comes as Tangier continues to experience significant urban and economic development while strengthening its position as a major national and international destination for investment and tourism. Many observers argue that the city deserves a modern and unified parking management system capable of protecting users’ rights and reducing illegal practices.

In this context, Somagec Parking has been highlighted by some observers as an example of modern parking management through the implementation of smart parking solutions based on digital technologies, organized parking spaces, transparent pricing, and modern payment and monitoring systems, helping improve service quality and increase transparency.

Local affairs observers believe that such systems are consistent with the broader digital transformation taking place in major cities. They also argue that smart parking solutions can help reduce informal practices while providing a more convenient experience for residents, members of the Moroccan diaspora, and tourists, particularly during the busy summer season.

Several analysts further maintain that expanding smart parking systems through delegated management companies, alongside stronger enforcement of existing regulations, could improve the organization of parking facilities, reduce unlawful practices associated with informal parking attendants, preserve the quality of public spaces, and enhance the overall standard of urban services.

Many stakeholders also point out that Tangier has already made significant progress in modernizing its infrastructure and public facilities, and that continued investment in smart solutions—including intelligent parking systems—would represent another step toward building a more organized, efficient, and visitor-friendly city in line with its ongoing development strategy.
