A report issued by the Council of Europe’s Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) on the implementation of the European Sports Charter in Morocco highlights Tangier as one of the cities benefiting from a nationwide program to modernize and upgrade sports infrastructure in preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The report states that the investments overseen by the National Company for the Construction and Management of Sports Facilities (SONARGES) extend beyond stadium renovations. They also incorporate environmental sustainability standards, improved accessibility, enhanced safety measures, and the integration of sports facilities into broader urban development projects that include commercial areas, public services, and urban transport networks.
According to the report, these initiatives will transform stadiums, including the Grand Stadium of Tangier, into long-term economic and social development hubs, ensuring their sustainable use beyond major sporting events while increasing the attractiveness of host cities for investment and sports tourism.
The report also recommends maintaining investment in sports infrastructure while strengthening environmental and social considerations. It emphasizes improving public access to these facilities and expanding sports services for local communities, in line with Morocco’s long-term vision for developing the national sports sector.
