Morocco’s Population to Reach 43.3 Million by 2060 as Ageing and Urbanization Reshape the Country

    ayaJuly 9, 2026

Morocco’s High Commission for Planning (HCP) projects that the country’s population will grow to approximately 43.3 million by 2060, up from 36.8 million in 2024. The increase, however, will be accompanied by significant demographic changes, particularly rapid population ageing and continued urbanization.

According to the report, the number of people aged 60 and over is expected to more than double, rising from around 5 million to 10.9 million by 2060. Seniors will account for nearly one-quarter of Morocco’s total population, creating additional pressure on pension systems, healthcare services and social protection programs.

The projections also indicate that nearly three-quarters of Moroccans will live in urban areas by 2060, while the rural population will continue to decline as migration toward cities persists.

The HCP stresses that these demographic trends call for forward-looking public policies, including strengthening rural development, modernizing social protection systems, adapting the labor market and improving public services to ensure sustainable and balanced economic and social development over the coming decades.
