Ziani: Moroccan Lawyers United Against Draft Legal Profession Law

    ayaJune 27, 2026

The President of the Association of Moroccan Bar Associations, El Houssine Ziani, said that all bar associations across Morocco remain united in their position regarding the draft law governing the legal profession, emphasizing that the association continues to defend the independence of the profession and the constitutional principles that regulate it.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Lawyers’ House in Casablanca, Ziani rejected reports of internal divisions within the Casablanca Bar Association, stating that its president regularly participates in the association’s meetings and collective decisions, including the recent work stoppage.

He explained that the association’s objections extend beyond specific provisions of the draft law to its overall philosophy, arguing that several articles are, in the association’s view, inconsistent with constitutional principles governing the legal profession.

Ziani also referred to the provision preventing former bar presidents from running again, saying it could deprive professional bodies of experienced leadership accumulated over the years.

He concluded by stressing that all protest measures adopted by the association followed a carefully coordinated approach and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the independence of the legal profession through institutional and legal channels.
