Tanger Med attracts over 1,500 companies and creates 135,000 jobs

    ayaJune 26, 2026

Jaafar Amiyar, Central Director of Operations at the Tanger Med Port Authority, stated that the Tanger Med ecosystem has attracted more than 1,500 companies and created around 135,000 jobs, describing the project as a major driver of Morocco’s economic and logistics competitiveness.

Speaking during a session of the United Cities and Local Governments World Congress, Amiyar said the project, launched in 2003, was designed as an integrated platform combining port, industrial and logistics activities, allowing Tanger Med to become a strategic hub for international trade.

He noted that the project has significantly transformed the Tangier region over the past two decades, while the relocation of major port activities enabled the redevelopment of Tangier’s historic port into a tourism and leisure destination and supported the city’s waterfront renewal.

According to Amiyar, Tangier’s population has grown from around 300,000 in 2007 to nearly 1.2 million today, while the industrial and logistics ecosystem surrounding Tanger Med now hosts more than 1,500 companies and provides approximately 135,000 jobs.

He added that Tanger Med is connected to more than 180 ports across 60 countries, with nearly one quarter of its container traffic directed toward African markets, particularly West Africa, while the Tanger Med Group is supporting port development projects in more than 20 African countries.
