A committee of Morocco’s House of Councillors approved on Monday, by majority vote, Bill No. 09.26 concerning the reorganization of the National Press Council.
The session was attended by Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid. The bill received support from five parliamentary councillors, while three voted against it and one abstained.
Speaking to the Moroccan News Agency, committee chairman Abderrahmane Drissi said the approval followed a detailed discussion of the bill’s provisions and expressed hope that the remaining legislative procedures would move forward promptly.
He stressed the importance of the legal text for the press and publishing sector and highlighted the need to complete the subsequent stages of the legislative process.
The bill was resubmitted to Parliament following a Constitutional Court decision that found some of its provisions inconsistent with the Constitution and requested the necessary amendments before final approval.
