Book Fair Honors Abdelghani Abou El Azzem

    ayaMay 6, 2026

The International Publishing and Book Fair paid tribute to Moroccan academic and lexicographer Abdelghani Abou El Azzem through a dedicated event that brought together scholars and writers to highlight his intellectual journey and contributions to the development of the Arabic language. This initiative is part of broader cultural efforts aimed at recognizing influential figures in Morocco’s academic landscape.

During the event, academic Abdellilah Belkeziz emphasized that the late scholar held a prominent position in the national cultural scene, noting that he contributed to establishing Morocco as an active contributor to Arabic lexicography through rigorous and sustained work, while also highlighting his diverse contributions in poetry, criticism, translation, and manuscript editing.

Critic Najib El Aoufi recalled his involvement in the literary scene since the 1960s, before shifting his focus to lexicography, where he developed a project centered on creating a modern Arabic dictionary adapted to evolving linguistic practices and contemporary needs.

Academic and publisher Abdeljalil Nadhim highlighted the innovative nature of his work, which relied on integrating scientific and literary approaches, as well as transitioning from print to digital formats, making lexicographic resources more accessible and aligned with current usage.

He also noted that this project reflected a broader vision aimed at strengthening the role of the Arabic language in society by balancing linguistic heritage with openness to modern developments.

Writer Ahmed Madini shared personal recollections of the late scholar, particularly during his university years, emphasizing his presence in student and cultural circles before expanding his experience both within Morocco and abroad.

Overall, the testimonies agreed that the legacy of Abdelghani Abou El Azzem represents a significant contribution to the development of Arabic lexicography and to strengthening the role of the language in contemporary contexts.
