4.4 Magnitude Earthquake off Gibraltar Felt Across Northern Morocco

    ayaMarch 18, 2026

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, off the coast of the Strait of Gibraltar, with tremors felt in several northern Moroccan cities without causing casualties or material damage, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

According to technical data, the earthquake occurred at a depth of حوالي 97 kilometers, approximately 69 kilometers east of Gibraltar and 60 kilometers southeast of Marbella, in a seismically active area.

Residents reported feeling the tremor at light to moderate levels in cities including Tangier, Tetouan, Larache and Rabat.

The “Felt Reports” platform also collected multiple reports from southern Spain, particularly in Malaga, where the tremor was described as noticeable but not alarming.

This seismic activity is linked to the geological setting of the Strait of Gibraltar, located at the boundary between the African and European tectonic plates.
