Morocco Beat Congo but Attack Worries Remain

Morocco beat the Republic of Congo 1-0 in front of over 50,000 fans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, but failed to impress in their final World Cup qualifier, creating few clear chances despite dominating possession.

The Atlas Lions controlled the game for long periods, yet their attack looked predictable and blunt. Igamane, Diaz and Saibari all came close in the first half, but none tested the 133-ranked team seriously. Hakimi’s set pieces and corners repeatedly lacked threat, and Ben Seghir wasted the best chance before half-time.

Coach Walid Regragui’s switch to a 4-4-2 in the second half and the introduction of Youssef En-Nesyri finally produced a goal. In the 63rd minute, Saibari’s pass found Hakimi, who squared for En-Nesyri to tap in the winner.

Despite the win, Morocco’s attacking play remained wasteful, with crosses and through balls failing to trouble the Congolese defence consistently. Saibari missed a simple chance in stoppage time to seal the game.

Morocco will hope to sharpen their attack before the Africa Cup of Nations in just two months, starting with a game against Comoros on 21 December at the same venue.
