Walid Regragui and Morocco Target Historic 16th Win Record

Rabat – Morocco are the new standard in football. Their 1–0 win against Bahrain was their fifteenth straight victory, matching the world record of 15 wins held by Spain in 2008–2009), and, by some accounts, Germany.

If the Atlas Lions beat Congo on October 13 in Rabat, they will stand alone with the longest winning streak in international football history.

The streak started in March 2023, after Morocco’s 4th place in the 2022 World Cup—a tournament that changed the face of Moroccan football. Instead of simply peaking in Qatar, Regragui’s team turned that momentum into long-term progress.

After the Bahrain friendly, head coach Walid Regragui shared his pride while also recognizing the challenge that lies ahead. He said:

“Today we share a world record with Germany and Spain, two great footballing nations. As Moroccans, we can be proud to stand alongside them in history. Our challenge now is on Tuesday, to become the only team in the world to have won 16 matches in a row. And that’s never easy, even if it might seem so.”

The Atlas Lions face Congo with history on the line

Defensively, for 15 games in a row now, Morocco have been very consistent; a solid unit, a disciplined midfield and measured creativity up front. Morocco don’t dominate possession for the sake of it—they control space, absorb pressure and transition with precision. It’s a winning formula and it’s working.

In the 15 matches, the Atlas Lions have conceded just 7 goals and achieved 9 clean sheets — a phenomenal achievement in international football where you have minimal time to prepare. The rhythm is constantly disrupted through the rotation of players.

Spain’s 15 match winning streak was during their golden generation between 2008 and 2009, and Germany’s was under Joachim Löw. Morocco’s new streak is from a team still building itself into the top tier.

The next match is on Tuesday, October 14 against Congo for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Morocco have already qualified for the tournament. The only thing at stake in this match is history: a 16th win in and an entry in the Guinness World Records book.
