Morocco Tops North Africa in 2026 Global Peace Index

    ayaJune 12, 2026

Morocco has been ranked as the most peaceful country in North Africa in the 2026 Global Peace Index, according to a report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, amid a broader decline in peace indicators across many parts of the world.

The report, which assessed 163 countries and independent territories, placed Morocco 65th globally with a score of 1.88, marking an improvement of three positions compared with the previous year.

Regionally, Morocco ranked ahead of Tunisia, which was placed 77th worldwide, and Algeria, which occupied the 99th position in the global rankings.

The report noted a 0.7 percent decline in the average level of global peace during 2026, stating that peace conditions deteriorated in 119 countries while improvements were recorded in only 42 countries.

Iceland retained its position as the world’s most peaceful country, followed by New Zealand and Sweden. Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Russia occupied the lowest positions in the ranking.

The study also highlighted the continued impact of armed conflicts on international stability, along with a growing number of countries involved in external conflicts and a sustained increase in global military spending.

According to the report, significant regional disparities remain in levels of peace and security, with Western and Central Europe continuing to rank as the most peaceful region in the world.
