The parliamentary majority is moving toward abolishing daylight saving time in Morocco

    ayaMarch 30, 2026

The debate over Morocco’s official time system has resurfaced, following calls from members of the governing majority to review the adoption of daylight saving time (GMT+1), amid increasing parliamentary and public discussion on the issue.

In this context, Member of Parliament Rachid Afilal Alami Idrissi submitted an oral question to Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, referring to data suggesting potential effects of the time system on sleep quality and concentration, particularly among children, as well as possible impacts on working conditions.

The MP also raised concerns related to commuting in dark conditions during certain periods of the year, especially in winter, noting that this may be associated with increased risks of road accidents or other situations, according to his remarks.

Meanwhile, MP Houria Didi questioned the economic relevance of maintaining the current system compared to its potential social and health effects, stating that the time system in place since 2018 may be linked to disruptions in the biological clock of certain groups, particularly children and the elderly.

She called on the government to provide an official assessment of the system and clarify whether it intends to review it, amid growing public debate and citizen initiatives regarding the issue.
