Taxi Professionals Call for the Return of Fuel Subsidies and Regulation of Ride-Hailing Apps

    ayaJuly 25, 2026

Taxi professionals in Morocco have renewed their calls for the government to reinstate the exceptional diesel subsidy and clarify why the financial support was suspended, arguing that rising fuel prices and the growing presence of ride-hailing applications operating, in their view, outside the legal framework are placing increasing pressure on the sector.

Professional and union representatives said the lack of official communication regarding the future of the fuel subsidy has created uncertainty for taxi drivers, who continue to face higher operating costs and declining revenues.

Mustapha Chaoun, Secretary-General of the Democratic Organization for Transport and Multimodal Logistics, said industry professionals were surprised that no new round of financial support had been announced. He noted that the organization had contacted the Head of Government regarding the matter but had not yet received a response, stressing that the sector requires comprehensive structural reforms.

He also identified the expansion of ride-hailing platforms as one of the industry’s main challenges, calling for a clear legal framework that would ensure fair competition among all transport operators.

Meanwhile, Sadik Boujaâra, President of the Road Transport Trade Union, urged the government to open a constructive dialogue with sector representatives and to enforce existing transport regulations equally on all stakeholders. He also called for the swift ratification of the international convention on decent work in the platform economy to protect workers’ rights and establish a fair and balanced competitive environment.
