Morocco has recorded this season a significant import of Dutch onions, far exceeding usual levels, amid a persistent shortage in the domestic market, according to the specialized platform “Fresh Plaza”.
Omar Kissi, a trader at the Casablanca wholesale market and fresh produce importer, stated that onion scarcity, especially yellow onions, is usually seasonal, but this year it has been more severe and lasted longer.
The platform noted that unstable weather conditions affected production in the Temara, Fès, and Meknès regions, the main suppliers to the national market, reducing supply and keeping pressure on prices.
Moroccan markets have seen onion prices rise in recent months, reaching 13 to 15 dirhams, due to the shortage of local produce and increased demand.
